Do you need a new approach to working with abstraction?
Gather, experiment, delve, and unfold.
Join Joanna for these 5 sessions that are 3 hour class intensives.
Students will deepen their conversation with this magical paint medium while expanding individual visual vocabulary and approach to abstraction. Over the 5 classes, there will be demos, presentations, plentiful painting time and one to one support. We will look outward and inward through tuning in to the senses; drawing; experimental exercises; reflection and writing.
There will be a focus on building paintings with optical depth and luminosity through layering, translucency, opacity and subtraction. Exercises and prompts will lead to a more experimental, playful and intuitive use of techniques and tools for adding/subtracting/ manipulating layers. Colour exploration, composition and resolving a painting will be emphasized. We will also cover creating a smooth surface and working with control; compatible media and a review of the elements.
The purpose of the class is to discover new approaches to working with abstraction and this medium, to hone your unique visual language and nurture a playful and intuitive approach in the studio.
In this class you will:
- Develop your visual voice through practising instinct and reasoning.
- Learn via theory and practice- experimenting and recording findings; problem solving through reflection, discussion and analysis.
- Loosen up; develop working intuitively and accessing the open mode.
- Refresh the fundamental elements and principles of art
- Develop reflection and critical thinking skills.
- Be supported in digesting your learnings and determining how best to move forward through the optional one to one session after the course.
"My teaching approach nurtures each individual's personal vision with plentiful one to one support, encouraging an experimental and intuitive approach to digging deep with materials, process, theory, interaction and reflection. Originating from my own studio practice, I have developed a teaching pedagogy which combines open experimentation; exercises that feed into the exploration of specific techniques/ideas; a building block approach to create paintings and reflection practices to assimilate the learnings."
